Little Red Riding Hood aka Kate

My adorable niece, Kate, wanted desperately to be
Little Red Riding Hood for Halloween-
My sis, talented in so many ways, is not
handy with a needle
so, what's an aunt to do?

I found this amazing inspiration pic on Pinterest
and I knew it would be perfect!
(costume sold on Etsy)

Pinned Image
Kate who's almost 5, and I took a field trip
to JoAnn Fabrics so she could find the most sparkly red fabric-
we went down many aisles so she could touch them
and oo and ah-
she found her fav and bought the supplies we needed.

Kate had a white tutu so I refashioned it!
adding red tulle to the underskirt

I gathered the tulle by hand-
I added a band of red elastic to limit the itchiness
of the tulle at her waist-

I sewed it to the underside of her white tutu

I covered the pink waistband with wide red sparkle ribbon
that I scrunched

The crushed velvet fabric was for the cape-
I measured Kate from the back of her neck to her knees-
she's a peanut and I wanted the cape short enough
so my babe wouldn't trip!

I cut out a half circle, the widest part
was the measurement from neck to knee-
I did a quick baste so the unfinished edges were neatly hidden-

I cut a large rectangle and doubled it for the hood-
Attaching it to the straight edge of the 1/2 circle,
right in the middle of the back-
I added the same sparkly ribbon to the bottom of the hood,
leaving enough for the
hood to tie under her chin-
(I know it's hard to see in the pics, I didn't realize how
hard it is to photograph red crushed velvet at night!)

It was very simple, all sewn by hand-

She was all set to go to her Halloween party!

Kate as Little Red Riding Hood!

She was a smash at her pre-school party!!

Take care, gotta fly-
